What makes a pillow box stand up
Two things. The base has to present a flat enough footprint to sit on, which means the lower tuck is shaped differently from the upper one rather than mirrored. And the center of gravity has to sit low, which is a function of where the contents rest inside the pack.
A tall box with light contents that settle at the top will tip, no matter how well the base is cut. Where that is a risk we add a simple internal pad to hold the product low, or widen the base footprint slightly — both quietly effective and neither visible from the front.

Designing a portrait panel
A standing format flips the artwork from landscape to portrait, which is a bigger change than it sounds. Most brand lockups are horizontal, and a horizontal logo in a tall narrow panel leaves large empty areas above and below it.
The formats that work are a stacked lockup, a vertical rule or pattern running the height of the pack, or type set to read up the panel. Deciding this before the dieline is drawn saves reworking the whole design later.

Will a standing pillow box actually stay upright?
With a properly shaped base and the contents sitting low, yes. If the product is light and settles high, we add an internal pad or widen the base — both are quoted with the box.
Does it still ship flat?
Yes. The dieline is different but the pack is still supplied flat and folded by hand, so storage and shipping are unchanged.
How tall can a standing pillow box be?
The practical limit is stability rather than manufacture. As height increases the base has to widen or the contents have to sit lower. We will sample anything marginal before you commit.
Can I have a window in a standing format?
Yes, and a portrait window suits the shape. Keep it within the flat panel and clear of the base area, which needs to stay rigid to carry the weight.
Is it more expensive than a standard pillow box?
Marginally — the die is different and the board is often a step heavier. The difference is small and shows on the quote.
What if my shelf space is limited in depth?
That is exactly where this format helps. A standing pack occupies less shelf depth than a flat one while showing more of itself, which is why it suits counter units and narrow fixtures.
Does a standing box need a heavier board than a flat-lying one?
Usually one step heavier, because the base is carrying the contents rather than the whole face resting on a shelf. It is a small change and it is what stops the pack sagging at the bottom.
Can a standing box also lie flat if a retailer prefers?
It can lie down, though the base shaping means it does not sit as neatly as a format designed for it. If both presentations matter, tell us and we will compromise the dieline deliberately rather than by accident.
How much shelf depth does a standing pack take?
Only the depth of the box itself, which is usually a fraction of a flat-lying pack. That is often the main reason retailers ask for the format.
Will a standing box tip if a customer knocks the shelf?
A well-based one is stable to normal handling. If the contents sit high and light, we add a pad to lower the center of gravity, which costs very little and settles the question.
