Pillow Boxes by Industry and Application

Most packaging problems are category problems. A cosmetic box runs out of room for its ingredient list; a cookie box stains from butter; a candle box bows under the weight; a lash box crushes the curl. The format is the same in every case and the specification is not.

These pages are organized by what goes in the box rather than by what the box is made of, because that is how the decisions actually break down.

Tell us what goes in the box

Not sure which of these suits your product? Describe it and we will recommend a specification rather than a page.

PDF, AI, EPS, PSD, JPG, PNG or ZIP, up to 12 MB. Nothing to send yet is fine — we can quote from a description.

We reply with a written quote and a specification. Your details are used to answer this enquiry and nothing else — see our privacy policy. You can also email info@thepillowboxes.com.

What changes between categories

Four variables account for almost every category-specific specification decision.

  1. Contact

Does the product touch the board? Food, cosmetics and anything with oil or fat change the board and coating requirement entirely.

  2. Mandatory copy

Cosmetics, food and supplements carry information loads that determine the layout before the design starts.

  3. Weight and fragility

Candles and glass need board specified for the load. Macarons and lashes need to be held clear of every surface.

  4. Visibility

Some products sell on appearance and some do not. That decides whether you are printing a box or cutting a window in one.

Categories we build for most often

  • Jewelry, watches and small accessories
  • Cosmetics, beauty, lashes and nail products
  • Soap, bath, candles and home fragrance
  • Bakery, confectionery, chocolate and specialty food
  • Apparel, socks, ties and textile accessories
  • Promotional, merchandise and event gifting

By Industry: common questions

Do I need a food-grade box?

Only where the product touches the board directly. Wrapped, bagged or cased products make the box a secondary pack, with a simpler and cheaper specification. Tell us which applies rather than assuming.

How much space does regulatory copy need?

More than most first designs allow, particularly in cosmetics and food. We plan the reverse panel around the mandatory content before the front is designed, because it cannot be compressed later.

Can one box serve several product lines?

Often, yes — a common box with a variable printed element or an applied label is far more economic than bespoke artwork per line, and it is what we recommend for ranges with many variants.

Which category is hardest to package well?

Anything fragile and visually perfect — macarons, truffles and lashes. In all three the answer is a fitted tray that holds the item clear of every surface rather than a stronger box.

Send us the product, not a box size

Send the product, the quantity and the date you need it on a shelf. We come back with a written quote, a specification and an honest view of anything in the brief that will not work.
