Two dimensions decide everything
The recess diameter has to hold the macaron with light contact — tight enough that it cannot slide, loose enough that placing it does not crush the foot. The box depth has to clear the top of the shell by a small margin, so the face of the box never presses down on it.
Both come from measuring real macarons rather than a nominal size. Shells vary by a couple of millimeters between batches, and that is the whole tolerance you have to work with.

Clear or board
Clear PET shows every macaron and every color, which is the strongest possible merchandising for this product. It also gives you almost nowhere to put branding, so it is usually paired with a printed band or a ribbon and tag.
A board box with a window controls the view and gives you a printed surface for the brand, the flavors and any required copy. For a patisserie selling in its own shop the clear box often wins; for a brand selling through retail the windowed board usually does.

Can the tray be printed as well as die-cut?

How do I stop macarons sliding in a partly filled box?
Do not sell a partly filled tray. Where the count varies, use a smaller tray rather than leaving empty recesses — an incomplete set reads as a mistake.
Will a window let the macarons dry out?
A filmed window does not; an open aperture will, and macarons are particularly sensitive to it. For this product a film window or a closed box is the right choice.
Can macaron boxes be stacked?
Lightly, and only if the board and tray support the load. A stack in a chilled display should be limited to two or three or the bottom trays compress.
