How the ribbon is actually fixed
A ribbon simply wrapped around a box slips. On a pillow box, where the faces are curved rather than flat, it slips more than usual. The reliable methods are a pair of punched slots that the ribbon threads through, or a small adhesive fix on the reverse where it will not be seen.
Threaded is better. It holds the ribbon exactly where the design intends, it survives handling, and it lets the customer untie and retie the box — which matters if the pack is meant to be kept.
Practical notes on width and color
- Ribbon width should relate to the box, not the shelf — roughly a fifth of the panel width reads well
- A ribbon that matches the board exactly can disappear; a half-step of contrast is usually better
- Wide satin on a small box overwhelms it; narrow twine on a large box looks mean
- Printed ribbon becomes economic at volume and is a strong brand asset
- Pre-tied bows ship bulkier than flat ribbon, which affects carton counts
Pre-tied or finished in-store
Applying ribbon is hand work, and that is the whole cost question. Pre-tied boxes arrive ready to sell, which is right for e-commerce fulfilment and for retailers with no time at the counter. They also ship less densely and cost more per unit.
Supplying flat boxes with loose ribbon shifts the labor to you and cuts the unit price substantially. For a shop that wraps at the counter as part of the service, that is often the better arrangement — and the tying becomes part of the customer experience rather than a hidden cost.

Will the ribbon slip off in transit?
If it is simply wrapped, very likely — the curved faces of a pillow box give it nothing to grip. Threading it through punched slots fixes it permanently and costs almost nothing extra.
Can I get ribbon in my brand color?
Standard ribbon comes in a wide stock range that covers most brand colors closely. An exact match means dyeing to order, which carries a minimum quantity — worth asking about if the color is central to your identity.
Is printed ribbon worth it?
At volume, yes. A ribbon carrying your name turns a generic finish into a brand asset and is reused by customers, which extends its life well beyond the sale. Below a certain quantity the setup makes it uneconomic.
Does pre-tying cost much more?
It adds a hand operation per box, so the cost is real and scales directly with quantity. Many customers order threaded-but-untied as a middle route.
What ribbon suits a kraft box?
Jute twine and cotton tape are the natural partners — they share the same unfinished character. Satin against kraft can work but the contrast has to look deliberate rather than accidental.
Can ribbon and a handle be combined?

Can you supply the ribbon separately from the boxes?
Yes, and for many customers it is the cheaper arrangement. You get flat boxes and ribbon on a reel, and the tying happens where the labour is already available.

It should relate to it. Roughly a fifth of the panel width reads as balanced; wide satin on a small box overwhelms it and narrow twine on a large one looks mean.
Will the ribbon crease in transit if the boxes are pre-tied?
Satin and organza can flatten under compression. Packing pre-tied boxes in a single layer, or with a light interleaf, keeps the bow presentable.
