Let the soap breathe
A fully enclosed box does two unhelpful things to a cured bar. It stops the scent reaching a customer who is deciding by smell, and on a bar that is not fully cured it can trap residual moisture against the surface.
An open die-cut aperture solves both. It also keeps the pack fully paper-based, since there is no film to separate — which matters to a category where natural positioning is close to universal.
Fitting a hand-cut bar
Handmade soap is not dimensionally consistent, and the packaging has to accommodate that:
- Size to your largest realistic bar, not the average
- A slightly generous width tolerates cut-to-cut variation
- Depth is the critical dimension — bars vary most in thickness
- A crumbly or soft bar benefits from a paper wrap inside the box
- Send us three bars from different batches, not one

What goes on the reverse
Soap has a longer mandatory copy list than most people expect — ingredients in descending order, net weight, and in several markets a responsible-person address. Add a cure date, a batch number and a scent description and the reverse panel fills quickly.
Plan it first. The most common revision we make to soap artwork is shrinking the front design to free up space that should have been allocated at the start.

Should the soap box be open or closed?
An open aperture is usually better. It lets the scent reach the customer, keeps the pack paper-based and suits the handmade positioning. A fully enclosed box gives more protection and more print area.
My bars vary in size. How much tolerance should I allow?
Size to your largest realistic bar rather than the average, and send us several bars from different batches so we can see the actual variation instead of a nominal dimension.
Will oil from the soap mark the box?
It can, on an uncoated board, with a bar that has a high superfat or a short cure. A light greaseproof inner wrap prevents it. Tell us your cure period and we will advise.
Is kraft the best choice?
It is the most common and it suits the category, but it is not automatic. Dark colors print well on it; pale pastels need an opaque white base. The kraft stock page covers what the board will and will not do.
Can I use a band instead of a box?
Yes, and it is the cheapest option with the most scent exposure. It gives almost no protection, so it suits a shop counter better than a shipped order.
How much space do I need for ingredients?
More than most brands allocate. Plan the reverse panel around the mandatory copy at the minimum legible size before designing the front — it is the single most useful thing you can do at the start.
Can a soap box be printed on the inside?
Yes, on a board coated both sides. On a soap pack it is rarely worth it — the box is usually opened once and discarded, unlike a gift pack that is kept.
How do I package a soap that is still curing?
Ideally you do not. A bar packed before it has finished curing can mark the board and can continue to lose weight in the pack. Where it is unavoidable, an open aperture and a greaseproof inner help.
Will the box hold a soap with a rough, hand-cut edge?
Yes, and a slightly generous fit is better than a tight one here. A snug box designed around a clean edge will not accept a bar with a rustic cut.
Can I print the ingredient list in two languages?
On a soap pack that is tight but often possible on the reverse panel. Send both language versions before the layout is fixed so it is designed around the longer one.
