Baked size is not the same as cut size
A cookie spreads in the oven, and how much it spreads varies with the recipe, the tray and the day. A box sized from the cutter diameter will be too small for some batches and every one of those becomes a packing problem.
We size from a real sample — several, ideally, from different batches — and we take the largest realistic diameter rather than the average. It is a small thing that removes an entire class of production frustration.

Shipping cookies

Why do my cookies keep arriving broken?
Almost always because they can move inside the box. Tightening the internal fit does more to prevent breakage than adding cushioning, and an E-flute construction handles the rest.
What size should I order if my cookies vary?
Size to the largest realistic baked diameter, not the average or the cutter size. Send us several cookies from different batches so we can see the actual variation.
Will the box stain from the butter?
Plain board will. A grease-resistant coating or a greaseproof liner prevents it, and which one suits depends on whether the cookie touches the board directly.
Should a cookie box show what is inside?
For retail and gifting it helps, particularly with decorated cookies where the appearance is the product. For plain cookies a printed image on the panel is usually enough.
How do I protect iced cookies?
Keep the decorated surfaces from touching anything. A divider or a backing card that holds each cookie in its own position is the reliable answer.
Can these be posted without an outer box?
In an E-flute construction with a tight internal fit, generally yes. In solid board they need an outer — see corrugated pillow box construction for the difference.
How do I package cookies of different sizes in one box?
Size the box to the largest and use a divider to hold the smaller ones. Cookies that can shift are what cause breakage, and a mixed pack shifts more than a uniform one.
Can the box hold a cookie with a topping that must not be touched?
Yes, with enough internal depth that the face never contacts the topping, and a divider if there is more than one. It is the same principle as a macaron tray.
Will a window fog in a chilled display?
It can, depending on temperature and humidity. Test it at your own cabinet temperature before committing — an open aperture avoids the problem where the product allows.
Can I use one box for both retail and postal cookie sales?
Only if you specify for the post, which means an E-flute construction and a sealed closure. A retail box posted as-is will arrive with broken cookies.
