Black packaging works because it removes information. There is no printed background competing with the product, no color to clash with what is inside, and any mark you put on it — a foil logo, a spot-gloss pattern — has maximum contrast to work with.
The practical question is how you get to black, and the answer changes the price. Printing a heavy black across a white board is the cheap route and it is the one that disappoints: the creases and the cut edges show white, which undoes the effect at exactly the point the customer is handling the box. A black-throughout board costs more and looks right from every angle.

Printed black or black board
A printed black is four inks laid over each other to build density, or a black ink with a supporting gray. It gives you a solid face and a white edge wherever the board is cut or creased. On a pillow box, where the curved tuck creases hard and the ends are visible, that white line is obvious.
A dyed-through black board carries the pigment in the pulp. Cut it, crease it, tear it — it is black all the way through. It is the specification for anything positioning itself as luxury, and the difference is visible from arm's length.
There is a middle route: print black on both faces of a standard board. It hides the inside but not the cut edge. We will quote all three and tell you which we would use for your product.
What sits well on a black pack

Where black earns its cost

It also solves a specific merchandising problem — a black box photographs cleanly against almost any background, which matters if the same pack has to work on a shelf, in a lightbox product shot and on a marketplace listing.

Why do my black boxes show white at the folds?
Because the board underneath is white and the black is printed on top. Creasing breaks the ink film and reveals the substrate. A dyed-through black board removes the problem entirely.
Can I print color artwork on a black box?
Yes, over an opaque white underbase. Without that base, colors print as dark glazes and effectively disappear. Adding the underbase is an extra press unit and is reflected in the quote.
Which foil looks best on matte black?
Gold and rose gold are the warmest and most used. Silver and matte black-on-black foil are more restrained. Holographic reads playful rather than premium, so it depends entirely on the positioning.
Is soft-touch worth the extra cost?
On a product where the unboxing is part of the experience and the box is handled once, yes — the tactile difference is real. On a shelf pack handled by many customers, it marks quickly and standard matte is the better engineering decision.
Does black board cost much more?
It is a specialist sheet, so it carries a premium over standard board, and the gap narrows as quantity rises. We quote both so you can see the actual difference for your run rather than guessing.
Can black boxes be recycled?
Paper-based black board goes into the paper stream like any other board, though carbon-black pigments can interfere with optical sorting at some facilities. Laminating it reduces recoverability regardless of color.
Does a dyed-through black board cost much more per box?
It is a specialist sheet, so the premium is real at small quantities and narrows considerably as volume rises. We quote it alongside printed black so you can see the actual gap for your run rather than deciding on a rule of thumb.
Can black boxes be produced without visible scuffing in transit?
Interleaving the bundles and avoiding compression in the outer carton removes most of it. Black shows abrasion more than any other color, so packing method matters more here than on a pale pack.
Is a soft-touch black box worth it for an unboxing video?
For a single-handling product, yes — the surface reads as expensive on camera and in the hand. It marks quickly, so it is the wrong choice for anything sitting on an open display.
Can I get a black box with a colored interior?
Yes, on a board printed both sides, and it is one of the more effective things you can do with a dark pack. A deep red, ivory or gold interior turns the opening into a moment for very little cost.
