Purple Pillow Boxes

Purple is the color most likely to disappoint on a first print run. It sits at the edge of what process inks can reach, and the CMYK build for a rich violet leans heavily on both cyan and magenta — so a small shift in either sends the result blue or pink. Most brands who tell us their last supplier "got the purple wrong" were sold a four-color job.

Run as a spot ink, purple is straightforward and beautiful. Deep aubergine and plum are among the most effective grounds for gold foil we work with, and lavender on uncoated stock is a mainstay of wedding and wellness packaging.

  • Spot color mixing for violet, plum, aubergine and lavender
  • Dyed-through board options at the deep end of the range
  • Gold and copper foil, both strong against a deep purple
  • Uncoated stock for chalky lavender and heather tones
  • Contrast interior printing to lift the opening moment
From $0.30 per piece — final pricing depends on size, material, quantity, printing, finish and inserts

The specific problem with process purple

To build a violet, a press lays a heavy cyan and a heavy magenta over each other. Both are near their maximum density, which is where ink behaves least predictably. Add a fraction more magenta and the color reads as a red-purple; a fraction more cyan and it goes blue. Neither drift is subtle at packaging scale.

Printing purple as a single mixed pigment removes the interaction entirely. The ink is one color, laid down once, and it reproduces the same way in every run. On a two-color box this is normally cheaper than four-color printing as well.

The purple range in practice

Where each shade tends to be used
ShadeCharacterTypical categories
LavenderSoft, chalky, calmingBath, wellness, soap, weddings
HeatherMuted gray-purpleStationery, artisanal food
VioletSaturated and vividConfectionery, gifting, promotional
PlumDeep, warm, red-leaningConfectionery, seasonal gifting
AubergineAlmost black, very richFine jewelry, luxury beauty

Making a deep purple look expensive

  • Print as a spot ink at full density rather than a process build
  • Choose matte lamination — gloss makes deep purple look plastic
  • Add gold or copper foil, which both have strong contrast against it
  • Keep the interior dark too, or the opened box breaks the illusion
  • Consider a dyed-through board at the aubergine end of the range

Purple Pillow Boxes: common questions

Answers to what customers most often ask before ordering this specification.

Why does purple print so inconsistently?

Because a process purple depends on two inks running at high density simultaneously. Small, normal variations in either one shift the hue visibly. A spot ink removes the dependency.

Can you match a purple from my website?

We can get very close, but a screen color is emitted light and ink is reflected light, so an exact match is not physically possible. We convert to the nearest Pantone and send a printed draw-down for you to approve.

Does gold foil work on lavender?

Less well than on a deep purple — there is not enough tonal contrast, so the foil reads faintly. On pale purples a blind deboss or a deep violet print gives you a clearer mark.

Is a purple board available?

Dyed-through boards exist in a limited palette and deep purples are among the less commonly stocked. Lead time is the practical constraint, so raise it early if the cut edge color matters to you.

Will a purple pillow box fade?

Some violet pigments are less lightfast than average. Under normal retail conditions this is not an issue, but for a product that sits in a sunlit window we will specify a more stable ink.

What pairs well with aubergine?

Gold and copper foil, cream or ivory print, and blush accents. It is one of the most flexible dark grounds available and works across gifting, beauty and confectionery.

Can I match a purple from a fabric swatch?

Send the swatch. Matching ink to a physical object is far more reliable than matching to a screen, and we will send a printed draw-down for you to hold against it.

Why do two purple boxes from different suppliers not match?

Almost always because at least one was a process build. Two presses building the same violet from cyan and magenta will not agree; two presses running the same mixed spot ink will.

Does purple work on kraft board?

A deep aubergine or plum does, and looks unusual in a good way. A lavender does not — over brown it turns muddy without an opaque white printed first.

What finish suits a deep purple pack?

Matte. A gloss laminate over a saturated purple pushes it toward looking plastic, which is the opposite of what the color is usually chosen for.
