When a brief calls for photographic imagery, gradients, brand colors matched to a Pantone reference or a densely printed pattern, the packaging needs a coated white face to print on. That is what cardboard pillow boxes give you: a paperboard sheet with a clay-coated surface that holds ink on top rather than absorbing it.
It is the most versatile of the pillow box stocks and the one we quote most often. Everything you can do to a folding carton — CMYK, spot colors, lamination, foil, spot gloss, embossing — you can do to this board, at a range of weights that covers a lip gloss tube through to a folded scarf.

C1S or C2S — and why it changes the quote
Coated one side (C1S) has a printing surface on the outside and a plain uncoated back. It is the standard for retail packaging because you rarely print the inside, and the uncoated reverse is cheaper and takes glue better.
Coated two sides (C2S) gives you a printable face on the inside as well. On a pillow box, where the tuck curves open in the customer's hand, that inside face is genuinely visible, and brands increasingly use it — a color block, a repeat pattern, a short line of copy. It costs more in both board and press time, so it is worth deciding early rather than adding it after the proof.
Choosing a lamination
The film over the print does more than protect it. It changes how the color reads and how the box feels.
Matte
- Mutes and deepens color slightly

Gloss
- Lifts saturation, especially reds and blues
- Hard-wearing through repeated handling
- Reads as mass retail rather than boutique
- Common on confectionery and toy packaging
Soft-touch
- A suede-like surface with a matte finish
- The most expensive of the three films
- Marks more easily than standard matte
- Used where the unboxing is the selling point
What the coated face makes possible

Getting the weight right
Board weight is the single most common thing brands get wrong on a first order. Too light and the box bows in the middle under the weight of the product, which is the exact impression a premium pack cannot afford. Too heavy and the end tuck fights you — the curve wants a radius the board will not take, and the pack pops open.
We size the board to the contents and to how far the pack travels. A boxed lip balm sitting in a counter display can run lighter than the same box going through a mailing bag to a customer.

Where cardboard is the wrong answer
If the pack has to survive a courier network on its own, without an outer, solid paperboard is not the right structure — the flat faces dent and the ends crush. That is a job for a fluted board, which we cover under corrugated pillow boxes.
And if the whole point of the packaging is a natural, unbleached look, printing brown ink onto a white coated sheet never quite convinces. Use the real stock instead.

Answers to what customers most often ask before ordering this specification.
Can you match a specific brand color?
Yes, on coated board a Pantone reference can be run as a spot color, which is the accurate way to hold a brand color across repeat orders. Building the same color out of CMYK is cheaper but drifts between print runs, so for a core brand color we recommend the spot.
What resolution does my artwork need to be?
Supply vector artwork where possible. Raster images should be 300 dpi at final print size in CMYK, not RGB. Our artwork preparation guidelines set out bleed, safe area and file formats in full.
Is matte or gloss lamination better for a premium look?
Matte, in almost every case. It reduces glare, deepens dark colors and feels closer to a fine paper. Gloss has its place where saturation and scuff resistance matter more than restraint, which is why you see it on confectionery.
Can the inside be a different color from the outside?
Yes, with a C2S board printed on both sides. A flat color block inside is inexpensive relative to full artwork and has a disproportionate effect when the box is opened.
Do you offer recycled coated board?
Recycled-content coated boards are available and print acceptably, though the white point is slightly grayer than virgin board, which matters if you have a large white area in the design. We will flag it on your proof if we think it will show.
How does cardboard compare to kraft on price?
At the same weight and quantity they are close. The cost difference usually comes from what you print, not from the board: a one-color logo on kraft is cheaper than four-color artwork with lamination on coated board, but that is the printing, not the sheet.
Will the box arrive assembled?
Pillow boxes ship flat and are folded by hand in a few seconds. That is one of their advantages — they take almost no storage space until you need them.
What is GC1, GC2 and SBS, and does it matter to me?
They are grades of coated paperboard with different pulp compositions and brightness. In practice you should describe the job — photographic artwork, a pale flat color, a heavy solid — and let us specify the grade. Choosing by code without seeing the artwork is how people end up paying for brightness they cannot use.
Can you print a solid dark color across the whole box?
Yes, though a full-coverage solid is where board and press are working hardest. Expect a slightly heavier ink film, a longer drying stage, and cracking at the crease unless we specify the board for it. We will flag it at quote stage rather than after.
Does coated board recycle as easily as kraft?
The board itself does. What changes recoverability is what you put on top of it — a plastic laminate is the barrier, not the clay coating. An unlaminated coated box goes into a paper stream much like kraft.
Will the white stay white over time?
Coated boards contain optical brighteners that fade slowly under strong light. For a product that sits in a sunlit window for months you will see it; for normal retail turnover you will not.
