The tray is the product
A lash sits on a curved former that holds its shape. If the pack presses down on it, the curl flattens permanently and no amount of handling restores it. The tray has to hold the lash clear of both faces of the box, which on a shallow pillow form takes deliberate design.
We build these as die-cut board trays with a raised bed, or as a formed plastic tray where the shape needs to be more precise. Board is cheaper and fully paper-based; formed plastic holds a tighter curve. Which is right depends on the lash style and the price point.
What the pack has to do after the sale
Unusually for packaging, lash boxes are kept and reused. That changes the specification:
- The closure has to work repeatedly, not once
- The tray has to survive the lash being removed and replaced
- Print and foil need to resist handling in a make-up bag
- The window should still look clean after a month of use
- The box becomes a brand object in the customer's space — worth the finish

The black-and-gold convention
Almost every lash brand uses black packaging with gold or rose gold foil. That is a strong convention and there is a real argument for following it — customers scan this category quickly and unfamiliar packaging can read as an unfamiliar quality.
If you follow it, do it properly. A printed black on white board shows white at every crease, and on a box customers keep and handle, that is the detail that undermines the whole effect. A dyed-through black board costs more and is the specification the look actually requires.

Board tray or plastic tray?
Board is cheaper and keeps the pack paper-based. A formed plastic tray holds a more precise curve and is the better choice for dramatic or heavily curled styles. We will recommend against your product.
Should the lash style be visible before purchase?
If your range has several visually similar styles, yes — customers need to see which they are buying. If each style is clearly distinct or you sell mainly online, a fully printed pack looks cleaner.
Why does my black lash box show white edges?
Because it is a black printed onto white board and the crease breaks the ink film. A dyed-through black board stays black at every cut and fold, which matters on a pack customers keep. Our black board page covers the difference.
Can the box be re-closable?
A pillow box closes repeatedly by nature, which is one reason the format suits lashes. Where a firmer closure is wanted we can add a magnetic-effect element, though it changes the price and the recyclability.
Is a matte finish a problem for fingerprints?
On black, yes — matte black shows skin oils readily. It is the accepted trade-off in this category, and a satin laminate is a middle route if it concerns you.
Can the tray hold a magnetic lash without interfering with it?
Yes, a board tray is inert. What matters is that the magnets are not compressed against each other in the pack, which the recess depth controls.
How do I stop the box being crushed in a mailing bag?
Either a heavier board with a tray that supports the faces, or an E-flute construction. A crushed lash box means a flattened lash, so it is worth over-specifying here rather than under.
Can the style name be changed without new artwork?
Yes, printed inline as a variable element. It is the only approach that stays economic once a range runs past a dozen styles.
Do lash boxes need to be black?
No, though the category convention is strong enough that unfamiliar packaging can read as unfamiliar quality. If you depart from it, do so deliberately and commit to it across the range.
