It is also the harder shape to engineer. On a rectangle, the curved tuck runs along the shorter edge and the geometry is comfortable. On a square the tuck span equals the panel width, so the curve is long relative to the box and the closure has less mechanical advantage. Board weight and tuck radius both need attention.

The structural trade-off
A pillow box closes because the curved end tuck is shorter than the panel it is folding over — that difference in length is what creates the tension. Square the panel and the difference shrinks, so the tuck holds with less force.
The remedies are straightforward once you know to apply them: a slightly heavier board than the equivalent rectangle, a deeper tuck flap, and a tighter tolerance on the crease position. None of this is exotic, but a square box cut on rectangular assumptions will disappoint.

Artwork on a square face

It is correspondingly unforgiving of asymmetry. An off-center logo on a square face looks like a printing error rather than a design decision, so alignment tolerances matter more here than on a rectangle.

Is a square pillow box less secure than a rectangular one?
It can be, if it is cut with rectangular tuck geometry. Designed properly — heavier board, deeper tuck flap — it closes reliably. The design is the variable, not the shape itself.
What size range works best?
Small to medium squares behave best. A very large square amplifies both the closure and the bowing issues at once, and at that point a different structure is usually the better answer.
Can I have a window in a square box?
Yes, and a centred circular or square aperture suits the format particularly well. Keep it clear of the crease zone, which we mark on the dieline.
Does ribbon work on a square pillow box?

Is it more expensive than a rectangle?
Marginally, because it often takes a heavier board and yields slightly differently on the press sheet. The difference is small and we will show it on the quote.
Can you make a cube rather than a flat square?
A pillow box is by definition a flattened form — the curve requires a shallow depth. A true cube is a different structure entirely, and we would quote it as a carton rather than a pillow box.
Does a square box use more board than a rectangle?
For the same internal volume, usually a little less, because a square footprint is the most efficient rectangle. The saving is small and is often offset by the heavier board the format needs.
Will a square box stand on its end?
Not reliably without a base designed for it. If you want it upright on a shelf, ask for a standing format rather than assuming a square one will stay put.
What size square works best?
Small to medium. Somewhere around three to five inches on a side keeps the tuck comfortable while giving the face enough presence to be worth the format.
Can a square box take a ribbon in both directions?
A cross-wrapped ribbon works and looks deliberate on a square face. It is hand work in two passes rather than one, so it costs more to apply than a single band.
